Developing Artificial Heart Controllers for 3M

January 29, 1997 (Minneapolis, MN) - Minnetronix, Inc., an electronic and software design company, announces an agreement with the 3M Company to develop and supply implantable electronic artificial heart controllers for the 3M Company and Pennsylvania State University. 3M and Penn State have been jointly developing an electric artificial heart since 1987 and are currently in the fourth year of a seven year research contract with the National Institutes of Health. The artificial heart is designed for human implantation and is intended to be a permanent replacement for the natural heart in patients with severe heart disease and for whom a heart transplant is not available. Under the contract, Minnetronix will supply electronic controllers to 3M for studies in which the hearts will be tested on human circulatory system simulators.
