Typical VAD System Today

The growing patient population with advanced heart failure - and the limited number of donor organs - has stimulated the use of ventricular assist devices, or VADs. However, postoperative management of VADs and their support systems can be challenging and costly.

Electric Motor-Driven Total Artificial Heart (ETAH)

Since 1996, Minnetronix has been working on improving the quality of life for VAD patients through next-generation VAD development. Founded by former 3M engineers, the company's initial project was the development of a software and electronics controller for an electric-motor-driven artificial heart (ETAH). This federally funded program was a joint effort between 3M Cardiovascular Systems Division, Penn State University, and Minnetronix, and it helped lay the groundwork for our technology direction and rapid business growth.

From these early days, Minnetronix has continued its work in power and control for mechanical circulatory support systems.

To improve quality of life for patients, our next-generation VAD development efforts strive to:

  • Reduce the size and weight of the controller and its accessories,
  • Minimize the number and the inconvenience of cables,

Since our first work in VADs, we have successfully tackled many technical challenges including motor control efficiency, power management, energy transmission, control feedback, and live battery exchange. We have created a robust intellectual property (IP) portfolio that covers areas including:

Magic™ Controller

Our broad IP can be applied across a range of applications for VAD power and control solutions.

Based on this IP, Minnetronix developed innovative, proprietary technologies that support ventricular assist devices, from today’s percutaneous driveline systems to future fully-implantable systems. These technologies include our Magic™ platform for VAD power and control and our exclusive transcutaneous energy transfer system (TETS).

Minnetronix’ Magic technology offers an advanced, easy-to-use platform for VAD power and control. The Magic technology is available in two models: the Magic PE controller for percutaneous driveline systems, and the Magic TE power controller for fully-implantable VAD systems.

In addition to the Magic technology platform, Minnetronix also developed a patented TET system to wirelessly power fully-implantable VAD systems. The Minnetronix TET system has been optimized for performance and safety and offers many key advantages over competitive systems. Unlike other systems, the Minnetronix system requires only a single channel for power transfer. No secondary RF channel is required, eliminating the risks of RF communication failure.

The Minnetronix system is the only TET system with clinical performance supporting a VAD, backed by 25 patient-years of clinical data with zero TETS-related adverse events. Based on these results, the system has an established reputation for clinical safety.
